Surgical Treatments for Short Gut
Many surgical treatments have been devised over the years to try to make the existing short gut function better. Some of these procedures are controversial, so getting multiple opinions from people with different perspectives, across different hospitals, is highly recommended. Please feel free to share your experiences here, since parent/patient perspectives may not always be represented in the published literature.
Surgical options include:
- STEP -- Serial Transverse Enteroplasty
- Bianchi Procedure
- Ostomy -- Used to treat poor motility due to dilation, reducing the threat of bacterial and yeast overgrowth. Does not increase the length of the bowel just makes what bowel is there work more efficiently. Once dilation decreases the bowels may be reconnected. For some children, the ostomy is permanent.
