Here are some ideas of high calorie foods to help promote weight gain. Remember that high calorie foods are often preferable to healthy foods when trying to promote weight gain. You can add high calories foods such as cream, oil, butter, sugar, sour cream, etc. to lower calories foods that your child likes. For example, make mac and cheese with heavy cream instead of milk and add parm. cheese; add butter or oil to vegetables; or spead peanut butter (use natural with no sugar added) on apples or crackers. Pureed baby foods tend to have less flavor and calories than pureed table foods, so attempt to puree table food if your child only accepts smooth foods. For easy to keep portions, freeze a larger batch in ice cube trays, transfer frozen cubes (~ 1 oz) to a zip lock baggy and then defrost cubes as needed.

  • Microlipids is the brand name of a fat emulsion manufactured by Novartis. It can be added to formula. We get it through our enteral supply company, as it's considered a medical food like the formula we use. The nice thing about the Microlipd is that it stays thoroughly emulsified in the formula so we don't have to worry about it separating.
