Digestive enzymes

A parent on the yahoo short bowel syndrome group uses digestive enzymes (e.g., wobenzym, Buddy Bear Digestive Enzymes), crushed or powdered and added to food. She uses one capsule of digestive enzymes per meal (e.g., with 60 mls of sweet potatoes). These enzymes are designed to help break down fats, proteins, carbohydrates, etc. into smaller amino acid chains, hopefully increasing absorption of oral or g-tube feedings. It is not clear how widespread or accepted this practice is. One doctor indicated that there is a fecal test to check for digestive enzymes, but he doesn't usually order that unless they have hit a road block.  He said if you get too much enzyme, it can cause a lot of skin breakdown on the bottom from the leftover unused enzymes.
