  • Some children's teeth may turn yellow to greenish, apparently due to high bilirubin, sepsis, high fevers, antibiotics, etc. Parents have been told that the permanent teeth are not likely to be yellow, and one parent on the short bowel syndrome yahoo group said that her son's permanent teeth were not pearly white, but they look much better than his baby teeth. (Other children's teeth may look a completely normal color.)
  • Oral iron can also cause temporary staining of the teeth, which should go away after stopping the iron (or switching to inserting it into a g-tube).
  • Dental work: The pediatric dental group (AAPD) and Oley recommend prophylactic antibiotics before dental work for children with central lines, because bacteria can enter the bloodstream during dental procedures that cause the gums to bleed, which may lead to sepsis. The antibiotics might be prescribed by the dentist, GI, or primary pediatrician.
